Lumbar vertebrae: The lumbar vertebrae are irregular bones which envelop, support and protect the spinal cord and make up the spinal column of the lower back. There are five lumbar vertebrae that also help to support and give structure to the back and allow for movement of the back by providing points for muscle attachments.
The five lumbar vertebrae form a part of the axial skeleton and are labelled as L1 through L5. Some people may have four or six lumbar vertebrae. L1 is the upper most lumbar vertebra and is located just below T12. L5 is the lower most lumbar vertebra and is located just above the sacrum. Conditions related to or afflicting the lumbar vertebrae include cancer, fracture, osteoporosis, osteomyelitis, strains, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, neurogenic shock, and herniated disks.
