Mitral valve: The mitral valve is located in the heart between the left atrium and the left ventricle. The mitral valve ensures that blood flows from the left atrium into the left ventricle in only one direction. In a healthy person, the mitral valve has two cusps that open in one direction as blood is pumped through the valve into the left ventricle. The mitral valve then closes and makes a seal to prevent the backflow of blood back into the left atrium. The mitral valve is opened by the increased pressure created by the pumping action of the chambers of the heart.
