Pericardium: The pericardium is a sac made of fibrous tissue that surrounds the heart. It also contains the roots of the great blood vessels, including the aorta, pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, and the vena cavae. The pericardium provides a protective layer for the heart and includes the pericardial space. The pericardial space contains pericardial fluid, which acts as a lubricant for the pumping action of the heart.
Conditions that afflict the pericardium include pericarditis, pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade.
