Descriptions of Pivot Joint

Pivot Joint: a freely moving joint in which movement is limited to rotation; "the articulation of the radius and ulna in the arm is a pivot joint"
Source: WordNet 2.1

Summary Information: Pivot Joint

Pivot Joint: A pivot joint is a type of movable joint that allows only for the movement of rotation. The atlas and axis joint of the neck is one type of pivot joint and allows the head to move side to side, such as when shaking the head "no". The pivot joint is a part of the skeletal system and is held together by ligaments, which stabilize it. Muscles that pass across a pivot joint also help to stabilize it. Hyaline (articular) cartilage coats and separates the ends of bones that form a pivot joint. Pivot joints also contain a joint capsule, synovial cavity, and synovial fluid.

Conditions that can afflict pivot joints include arthritis, dislocations, trauma, vertebral fracture, infection and inflammation.
