Plane Joint

Summary Information: Plane Joint

Plane Joint: A plane joint is a type of movable joint that allows for movement of bones in small sliding or gliding motions. Plane joints include the intertarsal joints of the foot and intercarpal joints of the wrist. The plane joint is a part of the skeletal system and is held together by ligaments, which stabilize it. Muscles that pass across a plane joint also help to stabilize it. Hyaline (articular) cartilage coats and separates the ends of bones that form a plane joint. Plane joints also contain a joint capsule, synovial cavity, and synovial fluid.

Conditions that can afflict plane joints include arthritis, dislocations, trauma, infection and inflammation.
