Proteins: Proteins are nutrients and one type of chemical substance that make up the body. Proteins are vital for many of the body's processes, including growth and development and many functions, such as copying genes and transmitting signals from cells. Proteins are made up of amino acids and are the building blocks of many elements of the body, including the hair, nails, blood, brain, nerves, enzymes, antibodies, and muscles.

Proteins are taken into the body through foods, such as meat, fish, cheese, nuts, and tofu. Conditions that can afflict the proteins of the body include malnutrition, anorexia, bulimia, nutritional deficiencies, amyloidosis, and genetic metabolic diseases.
