The small intestine receives food after the stomach, extracts various nutrients, and then passes the food to the large intestine. The connecting region between the stomach and small intestine is called the duodenum. Food in the small intestine is called chyme, and is processed by pancreatic enzumes (from the pancreas) and by bile produced by the liver. Folds in the small intestine and small projections called villi are used to absorb nutrients. The small intestine does almost all nutrient absorption, performing processing of sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, whereas the large intestine mainly absorbs water and salts from the remaining contents.

Small intestine: The small intestine is a hollow organ located in the abdomen and is a part of the digestive system and the gastrointestinal tract. The function of the small intestine is to further break down partially digested food from the stomach and to absorb nutrients from digested food. Pancreatic juice, bile, and intestinal secretions are secreted into the small intestine to help digest food. There are three main parts of the small intestine: the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum. After digestion, food residue moves from the small intestine into the large intestine.
Conditions that afflict the small intestine include small intestine cancer, celiac disease, inguinal hernia, Crohn's disease, paralytic ileus, ulcers, and small intestine obstruction.
