Soleus: The soleus is a muscle that makes up part of the calf. The soleus originates on the fibula and tibia and inserts on the calcaneus through the Achilles tendon. The soleus has a variety of functions, including planterflexion of the foot and helping to pump blood through the veins of the legs up to the heart.
Conditions that can afflict the soleus include strains, tears, cancer, myopathy, atrophy, infectious myositis, paralysis, neuromuscular diseases, lacerations and contusions.
