Spinal Nerves: Spinal nerves are nerves that emerge from the spinal cord. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves, which have a sensory function and carry stimuli from the skin, internal organs and the environment to the brain. They also have a motor function and transmit impulses from the brain to the body to initiate contraction of muscles and the function of glands. Spinal nerves and have a dorsal root and a ventral root and emerge from the spaces between the vertebrae. They then and divide and branch out to cover the body.
The spinal nerves include the spinal nerves of the cervical region, the spinal nerves of the thoracic region, the spinal nerves of the lumbar region, and the spinal nerves of the sacral region. Conditions that afflict the spinal nerves include trauma, sciatica, compressive neuropathy, herniated disc, peripheral neuropathy, meningitis, and spinal infections.
