Taste Buds: Taste buds are receptor cells that are located on the papillae on the tongue, mouth, and upper esophagus. There are over 10,000 taste buds, which have the ability to detect and differentiate five flavours, including salty, bitter, sweet, and sour and savory. Sensory hairs on each taste bud project from pores and detect taste when exposed to foods missed with saliva. Taste buds renew weekly and work together with smell receptors to create a full sense of taste.
Conditions that afflict the taste buds include infection, trauma, lacerations, and tongue lesions.
