Paget's disease:
Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))
The disease occurs worldwide, but is more common in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, where it’s seen in up to 5% of the elderly population. Although its exact cause is unknown, one theory holds that early viral infection causes a dormant skeletal infection that erupts many years later as Paget’s disease. Genetic factors are also suspected.

About prevalence and incidence statistics:
The term 'prevalence' of Paget's disease of bone usually refers to the estimated population
of people who are managing Paget's disease of bone at any given time.
The term 'incidence' of Paget's disease of bone refers to the annual diagnosis rate,
or the number of new cases of Paget's disease of bone diagnosed each year.
Hence, these two statistics types can differ:
a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence,
but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence.
For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.
