Glossary for Papilloedema

  • Abscess: General name for any pus-filled lump or swelling
  • Acoustic neuroma: A benign tumor of the 8th cranial nerve which lies in the tube connecting the inner ear to the brain.
  • Acute intermittent porphyria: A rare metabolic disorder characterized by a deficiency in the porphobilinogen deaminase enzyme which results in a build-up of porphyrins or its precursors in the body. Using certain drugs or eating certain foods can trigger the symptoms of the condition.
  • Ameloblastoma: A very rare disorder involving the jaw and sinuses. Cyts or tumors which may be malignant form in the jaw, sinus, nose or eye socket areas.
  • Aortic aneurysm: A localised dilatation of the aorta which results in a 50% increase in its diameter
  • Brain cancer: Cancer of the brain.
  • Cerebral hemorrhage: Bleeding in the brain
  • Chronic vitamin A toxicity: Chronic excessive ingestion of vitamin A can cause symptoms.
  • Dandy-Walker Syndrome: A congenital brain malformation characterized by increased fluid in the brain.
  • Diabetes: Failing or reduced ability of the body to handle sugars.
  • Encephalitis: Dangerous infection of the brain
  • Endocarditis: Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
  • Ependymoma: A tumor that occurs in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Symptoms vary according to the aggressiveness, size and exact location of the tumor.
  • Eye pain: Pain affecting the eye
  • Eye swelling: A swelling located at the eye
  • Graves Disease: is an autoimmune disease characterized by hyperthyroidism due to circulating autoantibodies. Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs) bind to and activate thyrotropin receptors, causing the thyroid gland to grow and the thyroid follicles to increase synthesis of thyroid hormone.
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Rare autoimmune disorder destroying nerve function lead to weakness and paralysis.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hypertension: High blood pressure
  • Hypoparathyroidism: A condition where the parathyroid glands don't produce enough parathyroid hormone for normal body functioning. The primary function of these hormones is to regulate body calcium levels.
  • Increased intracranial pressure: Increased pressure inside the skull due to brain swelling or fluid accumulation
  • Kennedy Syndrome: A rare eye disorder involving the association of optic atrophy (loss of optic nerves) and scotoma (blind spot in vision) in one eye and papilledema (swelling of the optic disc) in the other. It is often associated with a tumor in the optic nerve or frontal lobe of the brain. Various other symptoms may also be associated with the condition depending on the cause.
  • Leukemia: Cancer of the blood cells, usually white blood cells.
  • Malignant hypertension: Malignant hypertension is a condition characterized by very high blood pressure and swelling of the optic nerve. This type of hypertension is more common in people with kidney problems such as narrowed kidney blood vessels. The condition is a medical emergency which can cause organ damage if not treated promptly.
  • Meninges cancer: A disorder where a cancerous malignancy is found in the meninges of the brain
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Metastatic cancer: Any cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Mountain sickness: Illness from poor adjustment to low oxygen at altitude.
  • Muscle weakness: A condition which is characterized by an inability of the muscles to function at their full strenght
  • Optic nerve damage: Any damage either structurally or functionally to the eye that may result in permanent visual loss
  • Optic nerve disorder: Any condition which impairs the function of the optic nerve. Examples of such conditions includes glaucoma, optic nerve inflammation and impaired blood supply to the optic nerve.
  • Optic neuritis: Optic nerve inflammation
  • POEMS syndrome: A very rare disorder that has widespread effects on the body: P - polyneuropathy, O - organopathy, E - endocrinopathy, M - monoclonal gammopathy, S - skin changes.
  • Pseudopapilledema - blepharophimosis - hand anomalies: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by malformations involving the hands, feet ears and face as well as deafness.
  • Pseudotumor Cerebri: A condition involving increased intracranial pressure which can produce symptoms similar to a brain tumor.
  • Respiratory failure: Failure of the respiratory system
  • Retina Conditions: Any condition that affects the retina of the eye
  • Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage: Brain bleeding in the subarachnoid area
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
  • VACTERL hydrocephaly: A rare syndrome characterized by the VACTERL abnormalities (vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, congenital cardiac disease, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, radial dysplasia, limb defects) as well as a buildup of fluid inside the skull (hydrocephalus).
  • VACTERL with hydrocephalus, X-linked: A rare X-linked syndrome characterized by the VACTERL abnormalities (vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, congenital cardiac disease, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, radial dysplasia, limb defects) as well as a buildup of fluid inside the skull (hydrocephalus).
  • Vision changes: Any change in vision or sight.
  • Vision loss: Impaired vision or loss of vision
  • Warburton Anyane Yeboa syndrome: A syndrome that is characterised by the occurrence of aneuploidy that can be manifested as monosomies or trisomies
  • Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome: The malignant form of cerebrospinal meningitis
