Glossary for Parasitic Conditions

  • Acute Appendicitis: Infection of the appendix
  • African Sleeping sickness: Fly-borne African parasitic disease.
  • Amebiasis: An intestinal infection caused by a parasitic amebic organism. It is usually associated with poor sanitation.
  • Babesiosis: A parastic infection by a particular protozoa (Babesia) which is transmitted through tick bites. The disease produces symptoms similar to malaria.
  • Bladder Cancer: Bladder cancer refers to any of several types of malignant growths of the urinary bladder. It is a disease in which abnormal cells multiply without control in the bladder.
  • Chagas disease: A parasitic infection caused by the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by insect bites or blood transfusions. The disease primarily involves the heart and gastrointestinal system.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Severe chronic fatigue disorder often following infection.
  • Chronic diarrhea: Diarrhoea lasting for more than 3 weeks
  • Congenital Toxoplasmosis: Fetal infection with toxoplasmosis.
  • Cyclosporiasis: A parasitic disease caused by Cyclospora cayetensis which is transmitted by ingestion of food or water contaminated by infected fecal matter. Some cases are asymptomatic while others can be quite severe and untreated cases can suffer relapses.
  • Fluke infections: An infection caused by flukes
  • Helminth infections: The infection by a parasitic worm
  • Insect parasite conditions: Any condition that is a parasite and is contracted via the bite of insects
  • Leishmaniasis: A rare infectious disease caused by any of a number of parasitic Leishmania species. Infection can cause any of three different manifestations: cutaneous leishmaniasis, mucosal leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis.
  • Lymphatic Filariasis: Parasitic worm infection of the lympatic system
  • Malaria: A parasitic disease transmitted through mosquito bites.
  • Non-genetic diseases: Any disease that does not have a genetic component
  • Protozoan infections: A condition which is characterized by an infection caused by protozoans
  • Schistosomiasis: Parasitic fluke infection in developing countries
  • Toxoplasmosis: Infection often caught from cats and their feces.
  • Trypanosomiasis:
  • Typhoid fever: Fever from bacterial food poisoning.
  • Typhus: A general name for various arthropod-borne rickettsial infections
  • Worm conditions: Any condition that is caused by infestation of worms
