Glossary for Pellagra

  • Alzheimer's Disease: Dementia-causing brain disease mostly in seniors and the elderly.
  • Ataxia: It is a neurological sign and symptom consisting of gross lack of co-ordination of muscle movements.
  • Avitaminosis: A group of diseases caused by the deficiency of one or more vitamins e.g. Beriberi (thiamine deficiency), rickets (Vitamin D deficiency), pellagra (niacin deficiency), pernicious anemia (Vitamin B12), bleeding (vitamin K deficiency) and night blindness (avitaminosis A). Symptoms depend on the type and degree of vitamin deficiency. Lack of various vitamins can affect just about every part of the body including the nervous system.
  • Carcinoid syndrome: Carcinoid heart disease is a rare, metastatic disease that occurs predominantly in the right heart. The tricuspid and pulmonic valves are affected, leading to right heart failure, which results in increased morbidity and mortality.
  • Confusion: Mental confusion and impaired thinking.
  • Dementia: Various mental impairment conditions.
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Depressive symptoms: Inappropriate depressed mood.
  • Dermatitis: General name for any type of skin inflammation.
  • Diabetic Diarrhea: Diarrhea that occurs in diabetics as a result of the damage done by diabetes to the digestive system. Digestive system damage is caused by intestinal neuropathy (damage to intestinal nerves) or bacterial overgrowth or both.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Erythema: A condition which is characterized by redness of the skin due to congestion of the capillaries
  • Glossitis: Inflammation of the tongue
  • Insomnia: Insomnia is defined as repeated difficulty with the initiation, duration, maintenance, or quality of sleep that occurs despite adequate time and opportunity for sleep that results in some form of daytime impairment.
  • Irritability: Excessive feelings of annoyance or frustration.
  • Kwashiorkor: A malnutrition state that is produced by severe protein deficiency
  • Malabsorption: Failure to digest nutrients properly
  • Memory loss: The loss of ones ability to recall from their memory.
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Skin inflammation: General name for any type of skin inflammation.
  • Vitamin B deficiency: When there is a deficiency of vitamin B in the body
  • Vitamin deficiency: When there is any deficiency of vitamins in the body
  • Weakness: Symptoms causing weakness of the body
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
