Signs or Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease:
PID: DSTD (Excerpt)
Symptoms of
PID vary from none to severe. Particularly when it is caused by chlamydial
infection, PID may produce only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, even
while it is seriously damaging the internal reproductive organs. Because
of the vague symptoms, PID goes unrecognized both by women and by their
health care providers about two thirds of the time. Women who do have
symptoms of PID most commonly have lower abdominal pain. Other signs and
symptoms include fever, unusual vaginal discharge that may have a foul
odor, painful intercourse, painful urination, irregular menstrual
bleeding, and pain in the right upper abdomen (rare). (Source: excerpt from PID: DSTD)
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID (Excerpt)
The major symptoms of PID are lower abdominal pain and abnormal
vaginal discharge. Other symptoms such as fever, pain in the right
upper abdomen, painful intercourse, and irregular menstrual
bleeding can occur as well. PID, particularly when caused by
chlamydial infection, may produce only minor symptoms or no
symptoms at all, even though it can seriously damage the
reproductive organs. (Source: excerpt from Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID)
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: NWHIC (Excerpt)
The major symptoms of PID are lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal
discharge. Other symptoms such as fever, pain in the right upper abdomen,
painful intercourse, and irregular menstrual bleeding can occur as well.
PID, particularly when caused by chlamydia, may produce only minor
symptoms or no symptoms at all, even though it can seriously damage the
reproductive organs. Women with "atypical pelvic inflammatory disease"
experience only mild symptoms, unrecognized symptoms, or possibly, in many
cases no symptoms ("silent pelvic inflammatory disease"). This more
indolent but insidious form of pelvic inflammatory disease is less likely
to be detected compared to symptomatic pelvic inflammatory disease, thus
placing unsuspecting women at increased risk of disease sequelae.
