Penicillin allergy
Penicillin allergy: Introduction
An allergy to penicillin. Penicillin allergy occurs when the body's immune system treats the drug as a harmful substance and produces antibodies against it. Penicillin allergy is one of the more common adverse drug reactions. A penicillin allergy often occurs as a mild reaction such as a rash but can occasionally cause anaphylactic shock. Approximately 400 people die in the US each year as a result of penicillin allergy.
