An abnormal opening, tear or defect in the membranes separating the fluid filled inner ear and the middle ear. The condition means that changes in middle ear pressure affect the inner ear more readily and produce symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo and nausea. The condition can occur as a result of a head injury, severe ear infections, big changes in atmospheric pressure (e.g. scuba diving) or as a congenital defect. The fistula often heals itself but surgical repair may be necessary. It is also called a perilymphatic fistula or labyrinthine fistula.
