Glossary for Periodontitis

  • Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis: A rare form of bacterial oral infection which causes inflammation and ulceration of the gums. The infection results in an excess number of the bacteria which are normally found in healthy mouths. Certain viruses may be a factor in allowing the overgrowth of these bacteria. Factors such as smoking, stress, poor nutrition and poor oral hygiene may increase the risk of the infection.
  • Ankylosis of teeth: A rare genetic disorder where the teeth fuse to the bone which can prevent them from erupting. Varying numbers of teeth may be affected.
  • Bad breath: Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums: Bleeding from or around the teeth gums
  • Cardiovascular Disease: Diseases of the heart or blood vessels including cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke.
  • Coffin-Lowry syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by down slanting space between eyelids, bulbous nose, soft hands and tapering fingers.
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIII: A rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by lax joints, hyperextensible skin and mild connective tissue fragility - a mild form of the condition.
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, progeroid form: A connective tissue disorder caused by an enzyme (xylosylprotein 4-beta-galactosyl transferase) deficiency.
  • Ehlers-Danlos, syndrome, periodontitis type: A rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by lax joints, hyperextensible skin and mild connective tissue fragility - a mild form of the condition.
  • Gingivitis: Inflammation of the gums
  • Gum disease: Dental condition affecting the gums.
  • Gum symptoms: Dental symptoms affecting the gums
  • Keratosis palmoplantaris - periodontopathia - onychogryposis: A rare syndrome characterized by gum disease, nail and skin problems and various other anomalies.
  • Loose tooth: Looseness of a tooth with motion of the tooth
  • Low birth weight: When the weight of a new born baby is below average
  • Neutropenia, severe chronic: A rare blood disorder where there are abnormally low levels of neutrophils (type of white blood cell) in the body which impairs the body's ability to fight bacterial infections. There are four main types of the disorder: idiopathic, congenital, autoimmune and cyclical.
  • Periodontitis: Dental infection of the gums and/or related bones.
  • Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
  • Sensitive teeth: Teeth that are sensitive to cold or heat
  • Small baby: Small size of newborn baby
  • Sore gums: Sore or tender gums
  • Swollen gums: Swelling of the gums or the gum region
  • Tooth loss: The loss of a tooth
  • Toothache: Tooth pain caused by irritation of a nerve in the tooth root. The tooth pain may result from tooth decay, infection, injury or tooth loss.
  • Xylosylprotein 4-beta-galactosyltransferase (XGPT) deficiency: A variant of the connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos. It is caused by a deficiency of galactosyltransferase I.
