Treatments for Peripheral neuropathy

The list of treatments mentioned in various sources for Peripheral neuropathy includes the following list. Always seek professional medical advice about any treatment or change in treatment plans.

  • Treatment depends on the underlying cause
  • Chromium - possibly used for treatment of related chromium deficiency
  • Vitamin B1 - possibly used for related vitamin B1 deficiency
  • Vitamin B6 - possibly used for related vitamin B6 deficiency
  • No medical treatments now exist that can cure inherited peripheral neuropathy. However, there are therapies for many other forms. Any underlying condition is treated first, followed by symptomatic treatment. Peripheral nerves have the ability to regenerate, as long as the nerve cell itself has not been killed. Symptoms often can be controlled, and eliminating the causes of specific forms of neuropathy often can prevent new damage

Discussion of treatments for Peripheral neuropathy:

Therapy for peripheral neuropathy differs depending on the cause. For example, therapy for peripheral neuropathy caused by diabetes involves control of the diabetes. In cases where a tumor or ruptured disc is the cause, therapy may involve surgery to remove the tumor or to repair the ruptured disc. In entrapment or compression neuropathy treatment may consist of splinting or surgical decompression of the ulnar or median nerves. Peroneal and radial compression neuropathies may require avoidance of pressure. Physical therapy and/or splints may be useful in preventing contractures (a condition in which shortened muscles around joints cause abnormal and sometimes painful positioning of the joints). Peripheral Edema: Treatment
(In a Page: Signs and Symptoms)

  • Venous insufficiency: Mild cases should respond to leg elevation, avoidance of standing for prolonged periods, and compression stockings; surgical stripping of varicosities may relieve pain in severe cases
  • Congestive heart failure: Dietary salt restriction, diuretics, digoxin, ACE-inhibitors, β-blockers to improve cardiac function and control fluid overload
  • Cellulitis: Elevation of extremity, antibiotics to cover skin flora (streptococci, staphylococci)
  • Deep venous thrombosis: Anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin, low molecular weight heparin or warfarin for 3–6 months
  • Cirrhosis: Liver disease is typically progressive; symptoms may respond to diuretics and low salt diet; hepatic bypass procedures (e.g., TIPS) or transplantation may be necessary
  • Nephrotic syndrome: 80% of cases in children are caused by minimal change disease and treated with steroids; adults tend to have progressive illness; dialysis or renal transplant may be necessary
