Glossary for Peripheral vascular disease

  • Amputation: Loss of a limb or extremity from trauma or accident.
  • Atherosclerosis: Atherosclerosis is a syndrome affecting arterial blood vessels. It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries, in large part due to the accumulation of macrophage white blood cells and promoted by low density (especially small particle) lipoproteins (plasma proteins that carry cholesterol and triglycerides) without adequate removal of fats and cholesterol from the macrophages by functional high density lipoproteins (HDL). It is commonly referred to as a hardening or furring of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries.
  • Buerger's disease: Buergers's disease is a recurring inflammation and thrombosis (clotting) of small and medium arteries and veins of the hands and feet
  • Calf pain: Pain or tenderness of the calf muscle behind the lower leg
  • Deafness peripheral - neuropathy - arterial disease: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by artery disease, deafness and peripheral neuropathy.
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clot in vein, often in calf muscle vein in the leg.
  • Diabetes: Failing or reduced ability of the body to handle sugars.
  • Dyslipidemia: Abnormal lipid levels in the blood which may manifest as high cholesterol, triglycerides or LDL and low HDL.
  • Embolism: Blockage of an artery or blood vessel
  • Gangrene: Tissue death
  • Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia is an inherited condition involving abnormal lipid metabolism. Cholesterol levels tend to be with coronary artery disease usually developing before the age of 50. The heterozygous form of the condition is not as severe as the homozygous form of the disease.
  • Hypertension: High blood pressure
  • Intermittent Claudication: Calf muscle pain from walking
  • Leg coldness: A cold sensation occurring on the leg
  • Leg numbness: Loss of feeling or sensation
  • Leg pain: Pain affecting the leg
  • Lipoproteinemia: A disorder in which the proteins that carry fat around the body are defective.
  • Muscle cramps: A condition which is characterized by the uncontrolled contractions of muscles
  • Phlebitis: Inflammation of a vein.
  • Raynaud's phenomenon: Blood vessel constriction attacks affecting fingers and/or toes.
  • Smoking: The smoking of cigarettes
  • Sneddon Syndrome: A rare progressive inherited disorder involving the blood vessel disease and neurological symptoms.
  • Thrombosis: Blood clot occurring in a blood vessel
