Glossary for Pituitary conditions

  • Acromegaly: A hormonal disorder involving excess growth hormone production by the pituitary gland.
  • Addison's Disease: A rare progressive hormonal disorder characterized by insufficient production of certain hormones called adrenal corticosteroids.
  • Amenorrhea: Absence of menstrual periods due to many possible causes.
  • Autoimmune Diabetes Insipidus: Autoimmune disorder leading to diabetes insipidus.
  • Cushing's syndrome: A rare syndrome where excessive secretion of corticosteroids by the adrenal cortex leads to a variety of symptoms. Hormone-secreting adrenal or pituitary tumors are often the cause of the excessive corticosteroid secretion.
  • Diabetes Insipidus: Rare pituitary disorder often affecting the kidneys.
  • Empty Sella Syndrome: Congenital defect of the brain.
  • Endocrine disorders: Any disorder that affects the endocrine system
  • Galactorrhea: Abnormal breast milk production
  • Gigantism: A rare endocrine disorder where excess growth hormone is produced prior to puberty.
  • Hyperpituitarism: A condition that results in the excess secretion of hormones that are secreted from the pituitary gland
  • Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar level
  • Hypopituitarism: A disorder caused by reduced pituitary hormone levels. Hormones produce by the pituitary gland produces growth hormones, prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone, antidiuretic hormone and others.
  • Infertility: Inability of couples to establish pregnancy by having sexual intercourse over a period of time, usually more than 1 year in length.
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia: A group of conditions that is characterised by the hyperplasia and hyperfunction of two or more glands of the endocrine system
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1: Rare inherited disease causing tumors in multiple glands
  • Pituitary Cancer: Cancer of the pituitary gland.
  • Prolactinoma: Benign cancer of the pituitary gland producing prolactin.
  • Septo-Optic Dysplasia: A rare birth defect characterized by impaired vision and pituitary deficiency.
  • Systemic disorders: Any condition that occurs in a system of the body
