Characteristics of an exudative effusion
   Pleural fluid–serum protein ratio >0.5
   Pleural fluid lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) greater than two-thirds of the upper limit of normal for serum LDH
   Pleural fluid–serum LDH ratio >0.6
