Misdiagnosis and Plummer-Vinson syndrome
Females with anemia could be Plummer Vinson syndrome: Plummer Vinson syndrome commonly occurs in women between the 4th-7th decade of age. Importance is given to the condition due to its strong association with upper gastrointestinal malignancies. The patient presents with a triad of difficulty in swallowing mostly for solids, iron deficiency anemia and oesophageal webs. Difficulty in swallowing is a general symptom which can present in many other diseases too such as achalasia cardia, scleroderma, tumours of the upper gastrointestinal tract and spastic motility disorders. A good clinical history to determine the nature of dysphagia is important. In this case difficulty in swallowing is painless and intermittent and is limited to solids. A barium swallow and videofluroscopy must be undertaken to differentiate from other conditions....read more »
