Glossary for Poisoning

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Acute Appendicitis: Infection of the appendix
  • Agitation: A state of increased tension with episodes of emotional and physical irritability.
  • Alcohol - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to Alcohol during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Alcohol poisoning: Excessive ingestion of alcohol.
  • Body packer syndrome: Consuming packages of drugs for the purpose of concealing them for transportation.
  • Cardiac arrest: Stoppage of the heart, usually caused by heart attack
  • Chemical poisoning: Morbid condition caused by chemical.
  • Chemical poisoning - Radon: Radon is a naturally occurring element produced by the decay of uranium found in rock, water and soil. Radon levels may be increased in confined indoor areas which are connected to the ground through cracks in the floor or foundations. Ingestion and other exposures to the chemical can cause various symptoms. The type and severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of chemical involved and the nature of the exposure.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Choreoathetosis: Choreoathetosis is the occurrence of involuntary movements in a combination of chorea and athetosis.
  • Coma: Prolonged unconsciousness
  • Cyanide poisoning: Excessive ingestion of cyanide.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Drug poisoning: The poisoning of an individual with a noxious substance
  • Food poisoning: Poisoning from a substance or microbe in food.
  • Gastroenteritis: Acute stomach or intestine inflammation
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hyperpigmentation: Excess skin pigment or coloration
  • Iron poisoning: Excessive ingestion of iron - often occurs when children ingest adult iron tablets.
  • Lead poisoning: A type of heavy metal poisoning caused by excessive exposure to lead.
  • Liver failure: Acute liver failure (ALF) is an uncommon condition in which the rapid deterioration of liver function results in coagulopathy and alteration in the mental status of a previously healthy individual.
  • Malignant mesothelioma: Malignant mesothelioma affects the lining or membranes of certain large cavities in the body. These cavities, called the serous cavities, house certain major organs in the body including the heart, lungs, abdomen and others
  • Mercury poisoning: A type of heavy metal poisoning caused by excessive exposure to mercury.
  • Mesothelioma: Type of lung cancer associated with asbestos.
  • Methaemoglobinaemia: The presence of methaemoglin in the a persons blood
  • Migraine: Chronic recurring headaches with or without a preceding aura.
  • Myocardial ischaemia:
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Non-Contagious Diseases: Any disease that is not contagious
  • Rapid breathing: Excessively rapid breathing
  • Respiratory failure: Failure of the respiratory system
  • Reye's Syndrome: A syndrome in children recovering from infection and associated with aspirin.
  • Seizures: A rare syndrome characterized by mental retardation, seizures and high levels of hydroxylysine in the urine.
  • Stroke: Serious brain event from bleeding or blood clots.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
