Glossary for Polio

  • Botulism food poisoning: Extremely dangerous food poisoning requiring medical attention, but not always recognized because of its non-abdominal symptoms.
  • Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy: A rare disorder involving swelling of nerve roots and destruction of the protective layer around nerves. Severe symptoms can take up to a year or more to develop.
  • Diaphragmatic paralysis: Diaphragmatic paralysis occurs when the muscles associated with breathing become do weak to function properly. Breathing becomes difficulty and severe cases can result in death if breathing assistance is not delivered. The condition can result from such things as motor neuron disease, trauma and myopathy.
  • Diseases contagious from contaminated water: Diseases that can be contracted from contaminated water
  • Diseases contagious from food: Diseases that can be contracted from food
  • Diseases contagious from saliva: Diseases that can be contracted from saliva
  • Flaccid paralysis: A condition which is characterized by marked
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Rare autoimmune disorder destroying nerve function lead to weakness and paralysis.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Malaise: General feelings of discomfort or being ill-at-ease.
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Mild fever: The occurance of a fever but in a mild form
  • Muscle weakness: A condition which is characterized by an inability of the muscles to function at their full strenght
  • Myelitis: Spinal cord inflammation.
  • Myocarditis: Inflammation of the myocardium (muscle walls of the heart)
  • Myopathy: General name for any disease of the muscles.
  • Nerve symptoms: Symptoms affecting the nerves
  • Permanent brain damage: A condition which is characterized by damage to the brains function that is permanent in nature
  • Polio: Dangerous virus now rare due to vaccination.
  • Post-polio syndrome: A condition where patients who have a history of polio have a reoccurrence of muscle symptoms. The condition usually occurs at least ten years after partial or complete recovery from polio.
  • Rabies: An infectious disease that can affect any mammal including humans and is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. The infectious agent is the Neurotropic lyssavirus which affects the salivary gland and also causes neurological symptoms.
  • Respiratory failure: Failure of the respiratory system
  • Respiratory paralysis: Respiratory paralysis occurs when the muscles associated with breathing become do weak to function properly. Breathing becomes difficulty and severe cases can result in death if breathing assistance is not delivered. The condition can result from such things as motor neuron disease, trauma and myopathy.
  • Sore throat: Discomfort in the throat or with swallowing
  • Tick paralysis: Paralysis from Australian tick bites
  • Transverse myelitis: Inflammation of the spinal cord which results in various neurological and muscle symptoms. The inflammation can occur for no obvious reason or may result from a virus, bacterial infection, autoimmune disease or vaccination. The type and severity of symptoms is determined by the location and degree of inflammation.
  • Urine retention: Partial or total inability to excrete urine
  • Vaccine-preventable diseases: Any disease that can be prevented by the administration of a vaccine
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
  • Viral meningitis: Viral meningitis refers to meningitis caused by a viral infection
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
