Complications of Posterior vitreous detachment

Complications: Introduction

A vitreous detachment does not directly causes any severe complications, with no vision loss, other than the existing floaters and flashes. Flashes usually disappear within 6 months. Floaters may also reduce in severity, and people also get used to them. However, it is possible for a vitreous detachment to lead to a later more severe retinal tear or retinal detachment, so watching for their symptoms is especially important (and immediately reporting them as retinal tear or retinal detachment needs urgent treatment to avoid vision loss). Retinal tear and retinal detachment are rarer conditions than vitreous detachment, so many people never develop these complications.
