Premature Birth
Premature Birth: Introduction
The delivery of a baby prior to full term. A birth is generally considered premature if it occurs more than three weeks before the due date but after the period of viability (20 weeks or 500g). A premature birth reduces the amount of time a baby has to grow and develop and if the birth is too premature, the baby may be insufficiently developed to survive. The cause of a premature birth may be unknown or due to conditions such as a ruptured amniotic sac, diabetes, hypertension, weak cervix and malnutrition. Roughly 1 in 8 US babies are born prematurely. Premature births increase the infant's risk of health problems.
