Glossary for Primary biliary cirrhosis

  • Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • CREST syndrome: Group of symptoms usually related to systemic sclerosis
  • Cholangitis: bile duct inflammation (cholangitis)
  • Chronic Hepatitis: Chronic hepatitis is defined as inflammatory disease of the liver lasting for more than six months.
  • Chronic liver disease: Any form of chronic liver disease
  • Cirrhosis of liver: Chronic liver disease wherein normal liver parenchyma is replaced by fibrous tissue.
  • Cirrhosis of the liver: Scarring of the liver from alcohol or other causes.
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Hepatocellular jaundice: A condition which is characterized by jaundice due to injury or damage to the hepatocellular cells of the liver
  • Hyperpigmentation: Excess skin pigment or coloration
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Any type of digestive condition caused by bowel inflammation.
  • Itching skin: Itching feeling of the skin.
  • Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
  • Liver conditions: Any condition that affects the liver
  • Liver failure: Acute liver failure (ALF) is an uncommon condition in which the rapid deterioration of liver function results in coagulopathy and alteration in the mental status of a previously healthy individual.
  • Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
  • Pancreatic cancer: Pancreatic cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas
  • Polychondritis: A serious, progressive, episodic condition characterized by inflammation and degeneration of cartilage in the body. The duration and severity of the episodes can vary.
  • Portal hypertension: Portal hypertension may be defined as a portal pressure gradient of 12 mm Hg or greater and is often associated with varices and ascites.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease of unknown etiology that is recognized increasingly in children.
  • Sclerosing Cholangitis: Chronic hereditary disease causing inflammation and destruction of the bile ducts in and around the liver with subsequent blockage to bile flow
  • Secondary Biliary Cirrhosis: Secondary biliary cirrhosis is a condition where the bile ducts are unable to transport bile effectively due to a secondary cause which results in blockage, inflammation, scarring or some other damage to the bile ducts. The condition may result from such things as congenital defect of the bile ducts (e.g. biliary atresia), cystic fibrosis, gallstones or a variety of other secondary conditions.
  • Sjogren's Syndrome: Autoimmune disease damaging the eye tear ducts and other glands.
  • Skin bumps: Bumps or lumps on the skin.
  • Thyroid disorders: Any disorder of the thyroid gland.
  • Yellow eyes: Yellow color of the white of the eyes
  • Yellow skin: Yellow coloring affecting the skin
