Medical Research Breakthroughs and Psoriasis
New treatment for Psoriasis brings hope: Scientist claim that a new treatment for psoriasis, ISA247
which is in phase III trial, has proven to be safe and effective in moderate to
severe plaque psoriasis. Apart from this it has also been proven that due to
the linear relationship between drug dose and response, the dose can be
accurately administered in order to attain maximum clinical benefits while
minimizing the side effects. ISA247 is a type of calcineurin inhibitor which
may be employed to treat autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, uveitis, and
organ transplant rejection. Calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporin is presently the
most effective treatment for psoriasis, but its toxic effect on the
kidneys restricts its long-term use. Newer treatments, such as infliximab, are
also safe and effective for plaque psoriasis treatment, but have several
disadvantages such as high costs, inconvenient administration methods, and
general lack of safety and effectiveness data associated with their use.
A placebo-controlled randomized trial on 451 patients
aged 18-65 years with plaque psoriasis involving at least 10% of body surface
area conducted by Probity Medical Research, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada showed
that higher the dose of better were the results. The researchers also
concluded that ISA247 was safe and effective in the treatment of patients with
moderate to severe psoriasis during 24 weeks.
Cure Research discussion for Psoriasis:
Researchers continue to search for genes that
contribute to the inherited and other causes of psoriasis. Scientists
are also working to improve our understanding of what happens in the
body to trigger this disease. In addition, much research is focused on
developing new and better treatments. Some of these experimental
treatments, such as agents directed at the specific types of T cells
involved, work to improve the disease with less overall suppression of
the immune system. (Source: excerpt from Questions and Answers About Psoriasis: NIAMS)
