A rarely used medical term for food poisoning caused by bacteria and their toxic byproducts. Ptomaine poisoning is actually incorrectly used to label food poisoning as the ptomaines (formed when bacteria decompose proteins) themselves are not actually harmful but the bacteria and other byproducts of their activity are.
