Glossary for Q fever

  • African tick typhus: An infectious disease caused by a rikettsial bacteria and transmitted by ticks.
  • Aortic valve incompetence: A condition characterized by an inability of the aortic valve to function effectively
  • Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
  • Boutonneuse fever: An infectious disease that is caused by Rickettsia conorii which is transmitted by the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). The disease occurs predominantly in Mediterranean areas such as India and Africa. The onset of symptoms is usually sudden and the incubation period is usually between 6 and 10 days.
  • Brucellosis: An infectious disease caused by the Brucella genus which is transmitted from animals to humans.

  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Heart symptoms: Symptoms affecting the heart
  • Hepatitis: Any type of liver inflammation or infection.
  • Hepatocellular jaundice: A condition which is characterized by jaundice due to injury or damage to the hepatocellular cells of the liver
  • High fever: Where a patient has an elevated temperature

  • Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
  • Kenya tick-bite fever: An infectious disease that is caused by Rickettsia conorii which is transmitted by the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). The disease occurs predominantly in Mediterranean areas such as India and Africa. The onset of symptoms is usually sudden and the incubation period is usually between 6 and 10 days.
  • Malaise: General feelings of discomfort or being ill-at-ease.
  • Mediterranean Spotted Fever: A condition caused by Rickettsia rickettsia transmitted by the tick
  • Myalgia: Muscle aches and pains
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pancytopenia: A term used to describe a lack of all of the different types of blood cells - red and white blood cells and blood platelets. Cancer, infections and toxins are some of the causes of pancytopenia. Symptoms depend on the severity of the deficiency.
  • Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
  • Respiratory conditions: Any condition that affects the respiratory system
  • Rickettsia: A self limiting condition that is transmitted by mites
  • Rickettsial pox:
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever: A bacterial disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks. The condition causes fever and a characteristic rash and may be fatal in severe or untreated cases.
  • Scrub typhus: Type of typhus usually caught from ticks
  • Severe headache: A condition which is characterized by a severe headache
  • Sore throat: Discomfort in the throat or with swallowing
  • Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection causing nodules forming, most commonly in the lung.
  • Typhoid fever: Fever from bacterial food poisoning.
  • Typhus: A general name for various arthropod-borne rickettsial infections
  • Vaccine-preventable diseases: Any disease that can be prevented by the administration of a vaccine
  • Viral Hepatitis: hepatitis describes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis may be caused by alcohol, drugs, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, and viruses. Viral infection accounts for more than half the cases of acute hepatitis.
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
  • Zoonotic Diseases: When a condition is transmitted through a zoonotic organisms
