Deaths information for Rabies: The number of human
rabies deaths is low in the United States compared with the rest of the world. Each year,
about 30,000 to 50,000 people in the world die of rabies. These deaths occur because
people did not get vaccinations after being bitten by a rabid animal. Many occur in
Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Millions of people around the world get the anti-rabies
shots after an animal bite. Dogs are the biggest source of animal bites leading to rabies
shots worldwide. (Source: excerpt from Rabies: Statistics: DVRD)
Mortality rate: about 80% of cases of actual disease (most actual cases are prevented by rabies shots)
Worldwide Deaths from Rabies: In other parts of the
world, however, many people die of rabies each year. The World
Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around the world more than
40,000 people die every year from rabies. WHO also estimates that 10
million people worldwide are treated after being exposed to animals
that may have rabies. (Source: excerpt from Rabies, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID)
