Rectal abscess
Rectal abscess: Introduction
An abscess located in the rectal area. It is caused by a bacterial infection which results in a localized collection of pus (abscess). The abscess can be located at the opening of the rectum or further up the rectum. It can cause redness, pain and swelling at the site and may be associated with fever. Conditions such as diabetes, old age and Crohn's disease increase a person's risk of developing a rectal abscess.
