Article Excerpts about Retinoblastoma

(Source: Genes and Disease by the National Center for Biotechnology)

Definitions of Retinoblastoma:

A malignant tumor that originates in the nuclear layer of the retina. As the most common primary tumor of the eye in children, retinoblastoma is still relatively uncommon, accounting for only 1% of all malignant tumors in pediatric patients. These tumors may be multifocal, bilateral, congenital, inherited, or acquired. Seventy-five percent of retinoblastomas are unilateral; 60% occur sporadically. A predisposition to retinoblastoma has been associated with 13q14 cytogenetic abnormalities. Patients with the inherited form also appear to be at increased risk for secondary nonocular malignancies such as osteosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and fibrosarcoma. --2004 - (Source - Diseases Database)

Malignant ocular tumor of retinal cells; usually occurs before the third year of life; composed of primitive small round retinal cells - (Source - WordNet 2.1)

Retinoblastoma is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Retinoblastoma, or a subtype of Retinoblastoma, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
Source - National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Retinoblastoma as a "rare disease".
