A soft-tissue malignant tumor (sarcoma) of skeletal muscle origin. Rhabdomyosarcomas may occur in a variety of sites and are divided into four distinct types: pleomorphic (predominantly in male adults); alveolar (predominantly in adolescents and young adults); embryonal (predominantly in infants and children); and botryoidal (predominantly in young children). Rhabdomyosarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas found in children under age 15. --2004
