Babies smile more now..Thanks rotarix: Gastroenteritis [GE] is the most common infection causing vomiting and diarrhoea in children less than 5 years. The only treatment remains hospitalization and death occurs in very severe cases. But the new vaccine approved by FDA called Rotarix which is found to prevent the mild and severe cases of GE in children below 2 years. This vaccine is found to protect against the rotavirus of strains G1, G3, G4, and G9. The vaccine does not increase the risk for intussusception in a study conducted on more than 63,000 infants. The vaccine is a liquid and administered in two dose series to infants from 6 to 24 weeks of age. The common side effects noted following the administration of the vaccine was fussiness, irritability, cough, runny nose, fever, loss of appetite and vomiting.
