The Salmonella germ is actually a group of bacteria that can cause diarrheal illness in humans. They are microscopic living creatures that pass from the feces of people or animals, to other people or other animals. There are many different kinds of Salmonella bacteria. Salmonella serotype Typhimurium and Salmonella serotype Enteritidis are the most common in the United States. Salmonella has been known to cause illness for over 100 years. Half of salmonellosis cases are caused by 2 serotypes: S.Enteritidis (SE) and S. Typhimurium (ST). The proportion of salmonellosis caused by SE has increased markedly during the last two decades; SE is now the second most common cause of salmonellosis after ST. The incidence of ST has remained stable, but an increasing proportion of isolates show resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents. Many types of Salmonella cause disease in both animals and people. While the prevalence of different types of Salmonella species vary from country to country, in the United States Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis are the two most commonly reported. An antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella typhimurium, called Definitive Type 104 (DT104), first emerged in the United Kingdom in 1984 and was recently detected in the United States. Now it is the second most prevalent strain (after enteritidis) of Salmonella found in humans. This strain poses a major new threat because it is resistant to several antibiotics normally used to treat people with Salmonella infections including ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracycline.
