Discussion of diagnosis/misdiagnosis of Sarcoidosis:
The doctor confirms the diagnosis of sarcoidosis by eliminating other
diseases with similar features. These include such granulomatous diseases as
berylliosis (a disease resulting from exposure to beryllium metal),
tuberculosis, farmer's lung disease (hypersensitivity pneumonitis), fungal
infections, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, and cancer of the lymph nodes
(lymphoma).

Common Misdiagnoses and Sarcoidosis
Psoriasis often undiagnosed cause of skin symptoms in children: Children who suffer
from the skin disorder called psoriasis can often go undiagnosed.
The main problem is that psoriasis is rare in children, and not often
seen by physicians for this reason.
children may receive treatment for fungal skin infections.
See misdiagnosis of psoriasis or symptoms of psoriasis.
Chronic liver disease often undiagnosed: One study reported that 50% of patients
with a chronic liver disease remain undiagnosed by their primary physician.
The reasons are multifactorial.
Possible conditions include chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, hemochromatosis,
or other types of liver condition.
See introduction to liver disease or misdiagnosis of liver disease.
Chronic lung diseases hard to diagnose: Some of the chronic lung diseases
are difficult to diagnose.
Even the well-knowns conditions such as asthma or lung cancer often fail to be diagnosed early.
Some of the chronic lung diseases with diagnostic difficulties
include asthma (perhaps surprisingly), COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, mesothelioma,
smoker's cough, AIDS-related respiratory conditions (see AIDS), chronic pneumonia, and other respiratory diseases.
Rare possibilities include diseases like psittacosis (bird-related lung infection).
See other types of chronic lung diseases.
Misdiagnosis of knee pain: Finding the
cause of a knee problem is a really difficult and challenging feature in
general practice. The age of the presentation of a painful knee has varied
significance as many conditions are age related. Onset of the pain is also important
in determining the diagnosis as a rapid onset of painful knee swelling after
injury indicates blood in the joint. Some of the common knee problems that can
be misdiagnosed include osteonecrosis, loose bodies, gout, pseudogout,
sarcoidosis, Paget’s disease and meniscal tears. There are several problems
relating to knee problems that are difficult to diagnose but fortunately most
of these problems can be diagnosed with the help of an X- ray.
