Prevalence and Incidence of Sarcoidosis
Prevalance of Sarcoidosis:

Prevalance Rate:
approx 1 in 5,000 or 0.02% or 54,400 people in USA [Source statistic for calcuation: "20 per 100,000 overall; 5 in 100,000 white people; 40 out of 100,000 black people; Scandinavia 64 out of 100,000 people" -- see also general information about data sources]
Sarcoidosis: Rare Disease
Sarcoidosis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Sarcoidosis, or a subtype of Sarcoidosis,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
Ophanet, who are a consortium of European partners,
currently defines a condition rare when if affects 1 person per 2,000.
They list Sarcoidosis as a "rare disease".

Prevalance of Sarcoidosis:
The best estimate
today is that about 5 in 100,000 white people in the United States have
sarcoidosis. Among black people, it occurs more frequently, in probably 40 out
of 100,000 people.

Prevelance of Sarcoidosis discussion:
Sarcoidosis was once considered a rare
disease. We now know that it is a common chronic illness that appears all over
the world. Indeed, it is the most common of the fibrotic lung disorders, and
occurs often enough in the United States for Congress to have declared a
national Sarcoidosis Awareness Day in 1990.

Incidence of Sarcoidosis:
Overall, there appear to be 20 cases per 100,000 in cities on the east coast
and somewhat fewer in rural locations. Some scientists, however, believe that
these figures greatly underestimated the percentage of the U.S. population with
sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis:
Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))
The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, but these factors may play a role:
❑ hypersensitivity response (possibly from T-cell imbalance) to such agents as atypical mycobacteria, fungi, and pine pollen
❑ genetic predisposition (suggested by a slightly higher incidence of sarcoidosis within the same family)
❑ extreme immune response to infection.
Sarcoidosis occurs most commonly in adults ages 30 to 50. In the United States, sarcoidosis occurs predominantly among blacks, affecting twice as many women as men.

Sarcoidosis:
Sarcoidosis - epidemiology
(The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)
Disease occurs before age 4 years as arthritis, uveitis, and rash, and in adolescence as Lofgren syndrome of erythema nodosum, polyarthritis, and hilar adenopathy. Adult-type disease with marked pulmonary involvement may also occur in older adolescents. CNS involvement (rare): Seizures, cranial neuropathy, hypothalamic dysfunction

About prevalence and incidence statistics:
The term 'prevalence' of Sarcoidosis usually refers to the estimated population
of people who are managing Sarcoidosis at any given time.
The term 'incidence' of Sarcoidosis refers to the annual diagnosis rate,
or the number of new cases of Sarcoidosis diagnosed each year.
Hence, these two statistics types can differ:
a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence,
but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence.
