Glossary for Scarlet fever

  • Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
  • Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
  • Cellulitis: Inflammation of skin or subcutaneous tissues.
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Endocarditis: Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
  • Epididymo-orchitis: A condition which is characterized by inflammation of the epididimis and testes of a male
  • Erysipelas: A severe streptococcal bacterial infection where infection spreads from the skin to tissue underneath. The face and extremities are the usual sites affected.
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • High fever: Where a patient has an elevated temperature
  • Human parvovirus B19 infection: An infectious disease caused by parovirus B19 which causes fifth disease and erythema infectiosum.
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Kawasaki disease: A childhood illness that generally affects the skin, mouth and lymph nodes.
  • Measles: Once common viral infection now rare due to vaccination.
  • Middle ear infection: Infection of middle ear also called otitis media.
  • Peeling skin: Skin peeling off
  • Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis: Kidney complication (glomerulonephritis) following streptococcal infection
  • Rapid heart beat: Excessively fast heart beat (fast pulse) called "tachycardia"
  • Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
  • Rheumatic fever: An inflammatory disorder that can occur as a complication of untreated streptococcal bacterial infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The condition may affect the brain, skin, heart and joints.
  • Slap-cheek syndrome: Viral infection where children get rosy cheeks.
  • Strawberry tongue: The occurrence of a tongue which visually appears similar to a strawberry in colour
  • Strep throat: Streptococcal bacterial throat infection.
  • Streptococcal Infections: Various "strep" bacterial infections.
  • Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome: Toxic shock from streptococcal bacteria infection.
  • Toxic Shock Syndrome: Severe immune reaction causing shock
