Glossary for Sciatica

  • Alcoholism: Alcoholism is the compulsive urge to drink alcohol despite knowing the negative impact on one's health.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis: Inflammation of spinal joints similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Back conditions: A group of conditions that affect the back
  • Back pain: Pain from the back or spine.
  • Brain abscess: Pus accumulating into an abscess on the brain
  • Buttock pain: Pain affecting the buttock regions
  • Cauda equina syndrome: Is a neurological syndrome which occurs when a vertebral disc protrudes and compresses the spinal cord.
  • Common peroneal nerve dysfunction: A condition resulting from damage to the peroneal nerve which branches from the sciatic nerve and allows for movement and sensation in the lower legs and feet. Damage to the nerve can be caused by knee injury or trauma, lower leg bone fracture, constriction of the lower leg or even persistent crossing of the legs.
  • Diabetic neuropathy: Nerve damage from diabetes affecting any body part; most commonly feet.
  • Fibromyalgia: A difficult to diagnose condition affecting the muscles and/or joints
  • Fractures: Fracture of a bone; also "broken bone".
  • Herniated disc: A misaligned or "slipped" disc in the spine.
  • Inheritable disorders of connective tissue: Disorders that affect the connective tissue of the body that are handed down from generation to generation
  • Leg pain: Pain affecting the leg
  • Lower back pain: Pain in the lower back region
  • Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
  • Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterised by mechanical disrturbances due to degradation of joints. It is the most common form of arthritis, and the leading cause of chronic disability.
  • Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
  • Paresthesia: Pins-and-needles or burning-like sensations.
  • Pelvic fracture: A fracture in the bone of the pelvis
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Physical inactivity: When an individual is physically inactive
  • Piriformis Syndrome: When the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve and causes pain in the buttock or leg.
  • Posture symptoms: Symptoms related to body posture
  • Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Autoimmune form of arthritis usually in teens or young adults.
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Spinal Cord Tumor: Cancer of the spinal cord or central nervous system.
  • Spinal conditions: Any condition that affects the spine
  • Spinal cord injury: Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord as a result of a direct trauma to the spinal cord itself or as a result of indirect damage to the bones and soft tissues and vessels surrounding the spinal cord.
  • Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal cavity around the spinal cord.
  • Spondylolisthesis: A condition in which 2 or more vertebra may slide backwards or forwards on each other.
  • Stiff back: Reduced mobility or movement of the back
  • Thigh pain: A condition which is characterized by pain which is located in the thigh
