Sedative dependence

Sedative dependence: Introduction

An addiction to sedative medications. The addiction occurs when a sedative is taken over a long period of time. Sedatives are drugs which slow down the body's functions and are often used to treat anxiety or sleeping problems. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are the two main groups of sedatives. Most people have physical and psychological reactions if the try to stop taking sedatives. Sedative withdrawal is usually a long-term process and suddenly stopping the drug can in rare cases be life-threatening.
