Glossary for Shingles

  • Acute Appendicitis: Infection of the appendix
  • Alopecia: Various types of hair loss or balding
  • Angina: A special type of chest pain.
  • Biliary colic: Colicky pain as a result of gallstones blocking the gallbladder.
  • Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Chickenpox: Common viral infection.
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Chronic pelvic pain:
  • Contact dermatitis: Skin reaction to an irritant
  • Delayed Viral Syndromes: Syndromes caused by viral infections that are delayed in there appearance
  • Diaphragmatic paralysis: Diaphragmatic paralysis occurs when the muscles associated with breathing become do weak to function properly. Breathing becomes difficulty and severe cases can result in death if breathing assistance is not delivered. The condition can result from such things as motor neuron disease, trauma and myopathy.
  • Ear damage: A condition which is characterized by damage to ones ear possibly resulting in hearing loss
  • Encephalitis: Dangerous infection of the brain
  • Erysipelas: A severe streptococcal bacterial infection where infection spreads from the skin to tissue underneath. The face and extremities are the usual sites affected.
  • Erythema: A condition which is characterized by redness of the skin due to congestion of the capillaries
  • Eye damage: When there is any damage to the eye
  • Facial paralysis: A usually temporary facial nerve disorder where a part or all of the face becomes suddenly paralysed.
  • Fleeting blindness: A loss of vision that comes and goes
  • Galactorrhoea-Hyperprolactinaemia: Increased blood prolactin levels associated with galactorrhea (abnormal milk secretion). It may be caused by such things as certain medications, pituitary disorders and thyroid disorders. The condition can occur in males as well as females.
  • Genital herpes: Sexually transmitted infection of the genital region.
  • Glaucoma: Glaucoma is the term for a diverse group of eye diseases, all of which involve progressive damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is usually, but not always, accompanied by high intraocular (internal) fluid pressure. Optic nerve damage produces certain characteristic visual field defects in the individual's peripheral (side), as well as central, vision.
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • Hair loss: Loss or thinning of head or body hair
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Herpes: Virus with one subtype causing cold sores and another causing genital herpes.
  • Herpes zoster oticus: Facial and auditory effects of herpes zoster
  • Herpesvirus: A group of DNA viruses that occur in humans
  • Herpetic keratitis: A corneal inflammation due to a herpes virus - either herpes simplex or herpes zoster virus.
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Malaise: General feelings of discomfort or being ill-at-ease.
  • Mastalgia: Generalized breast pain or tenderness
  • Mild fever: The occurance of a fever but in a mild form
  • Paresthesia: Pins-and-needles or burning-like sensations.
  • Peptic Ulcer: Ulcer on the lining of the stomach or duodenum
  • Postherpetic neuralgia: A condition which is characterized by persistent burning pain and hyperesthesia along the distribution of a cutaneous nerve
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Ramsay Hunt syndrome: Facial paralysis with a vesicular eruption
  • Renal colic: Severe urinary system pain usually from a urinary stone
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Skin pain: Pain affecting the skin.
  • Tingling: Tingling, prickling, or pins-and-needles sensations
  • Varicella - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that the development of Varicella during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
