Prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Prevention information for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has been compiled from various data sources
and may be inaccurate or incomplete.
None of these methods guarantee prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
- Good prenatal care during pregnancy
- Avoid smoking during pregnancy
- Sleep baby on their back - this is safer than on their stomach. Can be difficult for babies that like to roll onto their stomach. Not recommended if the baby has some other disorder that makes them likely to vomit or choke such as GERD or certain upper airway disorders .
- Sleep baby on their side - not as effective as on the back; ensure their lower arm is forward to avoid rolling onto their front.
- Sleep baby on firm mattress - avoid overly soft beddings.
