Medical Research Breakthroughs and Sleep disorders

Sleep disorders and Behaviour issues in children: A new study carried out took a closer look at the association between childhood sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), that included snoring and sleep apnoea, and behavioural problems like hyperactivity and anxiety. The study revealed that especially overweight children with SDB, sleep for short periods of time, or have another sleep disorder like insomnia and are more likely to have behaviour issues. The study carried out on children and adolescents between 3- 18 years with SDB symptoms has revealed that more than half of the study sample was overweight or at risk for overweight, and 36 % were identified as being short sleepers. Almost half of all children had at least one additional sleep diagnosis. Forty seven percent had a history of behavioural problems and 23 percent had a reported diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The strongest predictor of adverse behavioural outcomes was the presence of at least one additional sleep diagnosis, especially insomnia - and not the measure of SDB disease severity. Though there is a lack of association between SDB severity and behavioural outcomes, it does not imply that SDB doesn't adversely affect children's behaviour. The weights of the sample group also appeared to be closely associated with poor behavioural outcomes, with the most consistent differences between the overweight and average weight groups. A shorter mean sleep duration was associated with worse behavioural outcomes.
