Slipped epiphysis: Introduction

A hip abnormality where the growing end (epiphysis) of the thigh bone slips from the ball of the hip joint. It may occur in one or both legs and causes hip stiffness, limping and pain. The condition mostly occurs in teenagers. There is no known cause but obesity increases the risk of this condition and it is more common in males. The condition often leads to osteoarthritis in later life. Also called slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
