Glossary for Somatoform Disorders

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Adjustment Disorder: This is a maladaptive reaction to identifiable stress
  • Back pain: Pain from the back or spine.
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Delusional belief about body shape or appearance
  • Bradykinesia: A medical term used to describe slow execution of movements and the ability to adjust the body's position is reduced.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Chronic pain: Ongoing pain of any type
  • Chronic pelvic pain:
  • Constipation: Difficult or dry bowel movements
  • Conversion Disorder: A psychological condition where physical symptoms arise due to emotional dilemmas.
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.
  • Dyspareunia: Vaginal pain after sexual intercourse
  • Dysuria: Painful urination
  • Facial pain: Pain affecting the face
  • Factitious syndromes: A disorder that a person believes they have that however does not exist
  • Fibromyalgia: A difficult to diagnose condition affecting the muscles and/or joints
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hyperventilation: Excessively rapid breathing causing blood gas imbalances
  • Hypochondriasis: A disorder characterised by a preoccupation with normal bodily functions as abnormalities
  • Leg pain: Pain affecting the leg
  • Major depressive disorder: A condition which is characterized by the occurrence of a major episode of depression
  • Malingering: The faking or exaggeration of symptoms of a particular condition
  • Mental illness: Any psychological syndrome
  • Neck pain: Pain affecting the neck
  • Neurological symptoms: Any symptoms that are caused by neurological conditions
  • Neurosis: Variety of mental disorders with self-awareness
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Behavioral disorder with obsessive thoughts and compulsive acts.
  • Pain Disorder: Somatoform disorder causing pain
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Shoulder Pain: A pain that occurs in the shoulder. There is often other associated symptoms depending on the cause of the shoulder pain. For example, swelling may indicate a broken bone.
  • Somatization Disorder: A disorder that is characterised by multiple somatic complaints
  • Undifferentiated Somatoform disorder: A disorder which is characterised by one or more physical complaints that are not intentionally produced or feigned
