Glossary for Stiff-Person Syndrome

  • Anxiety: Excessive worry, anxiety, or fear.
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Fractures: Fracture of a bone; also "broken bone".
  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Hashimoto thyroiditis is characterized by the destruction of thyroid cells by various cell- and antibody-mediated immune processes. Patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis have antibodies to various thyroid antigens, the most frequently detected of which include antithyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg), and, to a lesser extent, TSH receptor-blocking antibodies.
  • Movement symptoms: Changes to movement or motor abilities
  • Muscle spasms: Involuntary movement or contraction of muscles without full control
  • Muscle symptoms: Symptoms affecting the muscles of the body
  • Myalgia: Muscle aches and pains
  • Pernicious anemia: Pernicious anemia is a blood disorder where the body is unable to use it properly use Vitamin B12 to make red blood cells.
  • Possible human carcinogenic exposure - Phenytoin: Some evidence indicates that exposure to Phenytoin (an anticonvulsant medication) has a possible link to an increased risk of developing cancer in humans. The carcinogenicity of the substance may be influenced by the duration and level of exposure.
  • Possibly Autoimmune Diseases: Diseases that may be autoimmune or have an autoimmune subtype, but it is unclear or controversial.
  • Rigidity: When there is inflexibility or stiffness
  • Spasms: Involuntary muscle movements without full control.
  • Type 1 diabetes: Severe insulin-treated diabetes typically occurring in young people.
  • Unsteady gait: A condition which is characterized by a poorly balanced gait
  • Walking symptoms: Problems with walking.
