Glossary for Strongyloidiasis

  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Anemia: Reduced ability of blood to carry oxygen from various possible causes.
  • Ascariasis: Large intestinal roundworm from 6 to 13 inches.
  • Ascites: Fluid accumulation in abdominal cavity
  • Bacterial meningitis: Bacterial meningitis is a form of meningitis caused by bacteria that normally lives in the mouth and throat. When the immune system is unable to supress this bacteria, it travels to the cerebrospinal spinal fluid in the brain. From there it affects the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Bronchospasm: sudden spasm of the bronchi
  • Coughing: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Diabetic Diarrhea: Diarrhea that occurs in diabetics as a result of the damage done by diabetes to the digestive system. Digestive system damage is caused by intestinal neuropathy (damage to intestinal nerves) or bacterial overgrowth or both.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Internal bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Hookworm: Worm spread through feces with poor sanitation.
  • Malabsorption syndrome: is an alteration in the ability of the intestine to absorb nutrients adequately into the bloodstream
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pinworm: Small, threadlike parasitic worms mainly in colon and rectum
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Roundworm: A worm of the class nematode
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
  • Whipworm: Any nematode of the genus trichuris
  • Worm conditions: Any condition that is caused by infestation of worms
