Glossary for Surgical errors/complications

  • Acute rheumatic fever: Bacterial joint infection with risk of heart complications.
  • Anesthesia complication: Any complication which is the result of anaesthesia
  • Atelactasis:
  • Backache: The occurrence of the sensation of pain located in the anatomical position of the back
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clot in vein, often in calf muscle vein in the leg.
  • Embolism: Blockage of an artery or blood vessel
  • Endocarditis: Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hip fracture: Fracture of the hip joint
  • Hypothermia: Low body temperature
  • Nosocomial infections: Any infection that originates in a hospital
  • Oliguria: Urine output of less than 500mls in a 24hour period.
  • Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
  • Postoperative complications: Any complication that results from an operative procedure
  • Pulmonary embolism: Blocked lung blood vessel often from a blood clot.
  • Rheumatic fever: An inflammatory disorder that can occur as a complication of untreated streptococcal bacterial infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The condition may affect the brain, skin, heart and joints.
  • Septicemia: A systemic inflammatory response to an infection.
  • Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of a vein wall
  • Surgical foreign body: A foreign body that is left behind after surgery
  • Thrombocytosis: An increased number of platelets in the blood.
  • Thromboembolism: Lodgement of a blood clot causing blockage
  • Thrombosis: Blood clot occurring in a blood vessel
  • Urine retention: Partial or total inability to excrete urine
  • Wound Infection: Infection of a skin wound.
